With our blog we'll attempt to keep our friends updated on our travels through Canada, into Alaska, and the return home.

We'll post photos and updates as we are able -- with the assumption that there will be
places where we are unable to connect to the
electronic world for a few days.

Fabulous Flowers

SRD and his Daughter, Diana

You would be excused for assuming that in the far northern climate of Anchorage there would be a dearth of summer color in the short growing season.  I would like to dispel any such notion.  I have never seen flower beds and hanging pots more glorious than the 1300 baskets hanging on every lamp post and the approximately 80,000 flowers filling every border, window box and flowerbed around Anchorage.   I was fortunate to see one of the crew of workers caring for the downtown hanging pots yesterday and I asked him about the flowers.  He told me they water each of them every day with a fertilizer mix of 10-30-20 in every watering.  So, I assume that if I do that at home I will have pots as successful and dramatic as these!  I wonder if the 20 hours of sunshine, or at least daylight, every day of summer makes a difference??

Westchester Lagoon

One of our favorite parks in Anchorage is Westchester Lagoon and Coastal Trail.  We discovered it when Diana and John lived on the other side of town and we could walk or bicycle to it.  Now it’s an easy detour when we’re in the downtown area or we can still ride a bike there from their new house on the Tony Knowles Trail.  A few years of improvements have enhanced the plantings, created a world-class playground, and renewed the walking trail and wetlands with native grasses.  The trail goes through wetlands, over a stream and salt marshes and opens to a vista of the Cook Inlet and mountains beyond.

The playground was so much fun -- and strong enough for grownups!

Shall we try?
YES!!
